We were looking for way to start a business that would be home-based in a rural area. We wanted something we could do as a "retirement" business and really enjoy - and our love of animals played right into it.
Our first contact was on a visit to Montana to scout out property. We met James and Sarah Budd of Alpacas of Montana, and got our first glimpse/feel of the animals. Looking into those dark, soulful eyes was the clincher. Thanks you two for introducing us to alpacas.
Then we attended a three day seminar on how to get started in the alpaca business held by Mike Safley and Fred Kraft of Northwest Alpacas in Hillsboro, OR (gentlemen, thanks for all your help - we wouldn't have gotten started without you!) and after hearing all the pros and cons about becoming breeders, we were hooked. We'd traveled up there with absolutely NO intention of buying any alpacas at that time, and came away with a pregnant dam who was due in about a month and her yearling son. (See the links for Hawkeye's Cotton Ginny and Dust Storm on "Our Herd" page).
Why did we choose the lifestyle of breeding alpacas?
